Winter Migratory Waterfowl Tour

The Central Valley of California historically contained 4 to 5 million acres of wetland habitat. Today, less than 300,000 acres, about 5 percent, of the original wetlands remain!

Despite this loss of habitat, the Valley remains a vital migrational and wintering site for approximately 60 percent of the migratory waterfowl that use the Pacific Flyway to migrate from their northern breeding grounds. Many of these ducks, geese and swans depend upon the wetlands and agricultural lands of the Sacramento Valley for their winter survival.

This self-guided educational tour will provide insight into the importance of farmlands and wildlife preserves to migrating waterfowl in Butte County. Over 300 bird species have been recorded locally, about half of which migrate here for the winter.

Migratory Waterfowl Viewing Season: September - March. Best viewing: December & January.
